To reside in Japan, you will need a status of residency. In order to do so, you must get a visa that is most appropriate for activities that you are intended to engage in Japan.  There is a total of 29 types of visas in Japan and the requirements, as well as the authorized activities, are all different. Overall, they can be categorized into 3 main categories: working visas, non-working visas, and family-related visas.

Working visas allow you to work in Japan but only the kind of work that requires a high level of professional knowledge or skills. Therefore foreigners who engage in simple labor work will not be able to get a work visa. However, a new immigration policy launched on 1st April 2019 that accepts a large number of foreign workers, this new type of visa is called “Specified Skill Visa”. Foreigners with Japanese language proficiency and industry specified skills can apply for this 5 years visa. This work visa type will allow international workers to work in 14 sectors of the middle and lower level of labor skilled jobs including agriculture, materials processing, nursing care, shipbuilding, restaurants, airport ground handling & aircraft maintenance, food and beverage, hotels, industrial machinery, electronics and electric machinery, building cleaning, construction, vehicle maintenance, and fishery.

Non-working visas include students, dependents, cultural activities, and temporary visitors. Except for temporary visitor visa holders who cannot work, others can work below 28 hours per week after obtaining permission from the immigration office.

Family-related visas include spouse or child of Japanese nationals, long term residents,  permanent residents, and spouse or child of permanent residents. These visas have no restrictions on the activities to be engaged. It is possible to work in any field and change the job anytime.
